All Work & No Play
The days fly by, and today, I bring you a topic I've been planning to discuss: in-play betting. Having read a comment about it on social media, I thought it was worth exploring in a bit more detail.
In-play betting, also known as live betting, has a rich history that traces back to the early 2000s in the UK and Europe. It was during this time, with the advent of the internet, that this form of betting started gaining popularity. The concept, in theory, is straightforward. However, the main challenge today lies in the discrepancy between what you see on your screen and the actual game time, according to the sportsbook. This time lag can range from 10 seconds to 2 minutes. Adding to this complexity, sportsbooks implement additional time delays when placing a bet in play, making it difficult to secure the selection you want at the desired price. This issue partly explains why some betting companies, namely Betr, have struggled, especially in sports with rapid scoring and frequent play turnovers.
To understand why these delays occur, let's rewind to my earlier days working with a company called Running Ball. The company's primary objective was to send employees to live games and relay real-time information via mobile phone. The arrangement was simple: you were paid $50, plus travel expenses and the ticket price, with the condition that you arrived at the stadium 30 minutes before kickoff. While living in the Middle East, this 30-minute rule occasionally posed significant challenges, especially toward the end of my tenure. Although I'd love to delve into the details, some aspects are best kept private.
For any betting company to offer in-play markets like corners, bookings, and other prop bets at this time, they had to rely on two separate data feeds from distinct companies to verify the information. One of these key players is Sportradar (BetRadar), who supply data that feeds into the systems of betting platforms across the UK and Europe, allowing them to offer a broader range of in-play markets and events.
Real-time data is the backbone of in-play betting. Even in today's technologically advanced world, the system remains fundamentally the same. Whether it's the Champions League final, the World Cup final, or the Super Bowl, individuals inside the stadium relay vital information back to sportsbooks. This data is indispensable for trading games in play, highlighting the crucial role of real-time information in this dynamic form of betting.
The time delays experienced in live betting are primarily due to the process of gathering and transmitting data. Once a significant event occurs, like a goal or a booking, it must be observed, recorded, and communicated by data scouts in the stadium. This information then travels through various channels before reaching the sportsbook, which processes and updates the odds. Each step, no matter how fast, introduces a slight delay. Additionally, sportsbooks intentionally introduce brief delays to manage their risk, as rapid changes in game dynamics can quickly shift betting odds. Prolonged periods of market unavailability? Random suspensions on games being screened live on TV? If there’s any edge to be had, and a question that wont be answered, you’ll find it in Sports Betting.
While in-play betting is now the lifeblood of Sportsbooks and offers an exciting and interactive way to engage with sports, it's important to be aware of its challenges. The inherent delays in the system, due to data collection and transmission, can impact the betting experience. Understanding these nuances can help bettors navigate the complexities of live betting and set realistic expectations.
It's also best to understand that these safeguards are implemented at the most extreme level and lead to lengthy suspensions on matches where the company may feel the weight of money is incorrect. It also means that any accepted bet is easily objected to by the bookie, leaving customers with very little chance to dispute a bet placed reasonably should the sportsbook not wish to receive a bet that may have just beaten the suspension being implemented.
Wanna beat the bookie in play? Get yourself down the game and beat them at their own game.
